Get Involved: Volunteer and Recognition Opportunities for NASS Members

The strength of the North American Spine Society (NASS) lies in the active engagement of its members. From shaping clinical guidelines and educational programming to advancing advocacy efforts and celebrating excellence in the field, NASS relies on members who are willing to contribute their time, expertise, and leadership. Whether through volunteer service or by recognizing colleagues whose work has made a meaningful impact, member involvement is what keeps the Society moving forward.

NASS requests that members consider getting involved by March 31, 2026, in two ways:

Applying to Become a Volunteer
Nominating Worthy Colleagues for Recognition

Service That Shapes the Society

NASS volunteers form the foundation of the Society’s work. Committees bring together members from across disciplines to tackle complex challenges in spine care. This collaborative work ensures that NASS programs remain relevant, rigorous, and responsive to the needs of patients and professionals alike.

Volunteering with NASS is also a meaningful professional opportunity. Committee service allows members to collaborate with respected peers, contribute to work aligned with their interests, and help influence the direction of spine care. It is one of the most direct ways members can make an impact while building relationships and leadership experience.

Application Process and Eligibility

The online committee application is open year-round and appointments will be made in Summer 2026 for 3-year terms beginning at the NASS Annual Meeting San Antonio, TX, October 14-17, 2026. To apply, members should:

1. Review the list of committees accepting applications at www.spine.org/getinvolved.

2. Ensure your membership is in good standing for 2026 and you have a current (updated April 1, 2025 or later) disclosure on file with NASS.

3. Apply online for up to 3 groups, providing an explanation of your experience or expertise related specifically to those groups.

4. If the group(s) for which you have applied have additional requirements (view each group’s requirements at www.spine.org/getinvolved), complete these no later than April 30, 2026.

Applications for committee and other volunteer roles are open through March 31, 2026, at www.spine.org/getinvolved.

Impact Worth Recognizing

In addition to volunteer service, NASS celebrates members whose contributions have significantly advanced spine care through its annual Recognition Awards. These awards highlight excellence in leadership, research, advocacy, and service, honoring individuals whose work has helped shape standards of care and inspired the broader spine community. Recognition Awards provide an opportunity for members to shine a spotlight on peers whose dedication and achievements reflect the mission and values of NASS.

In 2026, a new online nomination system will make nominating colleagues easier than ever, and formal letters of recommendation are no longer required at the time of nomination. If your nomination becomes a finalist, you will be asked to submit a formal letter of recommendation for awards presented at the 2026 NASS Annual Meeting, October 14-17, 2026 in San Antonio, TX.

Awards Available for Nomination:

Leon Wiltse Award: To recognize excellence in leadership and/or clinical research in spine care.

Henry Farfan Award: To recognize outstanding contributions in spine related basic science research.

David Selby Award: To recognize contributions to the art and science of spinal disorder management through service to NASS (NASS Past Presidents are not eligible for this award.)
